I never understood why this song wasn't the one that people used for jokes.... For all its faults, it's a much better tune

Because it's not as cheesy. That's the joke. You pretend to link to something that somebody wants to see, and then they click on it and it's this cheesy, yet maddeningly catchy old song. That's a Rickroll. The Internet is weird.
