Blogs Are Trying to Break My Heart*

Male Jim Treacher | Category: Comedy • Web

Stuff White People Like was started on January 18, 2008 and has received almost 5 million hits and growing media attention. People are losing their minds trying to figure out who this guy is and why he's such a racist/genius/racist genius. And what's worse, I can't be angry at the dude, because he's funny and mocks many deserving targets -- bottled water, threatening to move to Canada, Sarah Silverman, etc. -- and he deserves the attention.

So here's my post congratulating the author on his amazing, almost literally overnight success, while praying to all available gods that he loses his hands and eyes in a bus crash. (White people like passive-aggressiveness.)

*This headline combines two more things white people like: referencing indie films you haven't seen and whining that nobody reads your blog. Actually three things, since it's an indie film about an alt-country band. And this "ironic" footnote makes four. We really can't help it, can we?

I posted about the guy a few days ago. I don't think he is funny mostly because his so-called stereotypes about whites don't apply to most whites. In fact, they don't apply to most whites outside of major urban areas like NYC. I'm white. I know a lot of white folks (and I'm not just saying that - he he). Most don't do the things he says or at least not to the point that they become a stereotype which would make this funny.

But hey, congrats on his success.

At least a half-dozen people have sent me links to "Stuff White People Like", but it sure seems to me that it ought to be titled, "Stuff Urban White Leftist Snobs Like".

See, that's what I think is funny about it.

You know, hyperbole? Humorous overstatement?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, hyperbole. Humorous overstatement. I missed tha, dammit.

See that's why you guys write for a living and I just sit at home eating peanut M&Ms and watching DVDs of old episodes of Saved by the Bell.

:P

Can we start a new kind of joke:

he's SO white (HOW WHITE IS HE?)

... he listens to Beck in his Lexus hybrid. ....he brings Whole Foods no-cruelty chicken to his Chinese restaurant so he can still eat his favorite meal there.

she's SO white (HOW WHITE IS SHE?)

...she's convinced herself she has a gluten intolerance that prevents her from eating noodles but not cake from that new bakery down the street where they make everything fresh. ...she goes cross-country skiing. ...she checks the county recycling website to see if glossy paper is on the list now.

(I'm so white, I know these people!)

Hyperbole??!! It nearly killed him. Uh, wrong setup. Never mind.

The site's moderately funny at times - kind of like South Park these days.

But here's a site that I've found to be consistently hilarious:

I don't know why, but living in Nashville I find this line pretty hilarious-

"Do not worry about the music part, if you have more than two white males on your team, it is certain that one of them can play the guitar."

Man, I'm overjoyed when I get ten hits a day nowadays. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching myself yank it in front of a mirror.*

*another thing white people like

That blog is pretty hilarious, but I'm calling flash in the pan. Blowing Smoke is the real comedy gold, man. White Whine is pretty good, too.

Here's a recent discovery. Their archives are worth pillaging. Yes, I know they're from That City.

What, no mayonnaise jokes? Piker.

I love that blog. He's reminding the people who have issues about being white that they really are white - to the point of creating stereotypes. I find it hilarious, but then I'm white. But authentic because I married an Asian and the women at the nail shop discriminate against me because of it. How transcendent is that?

"Nail." Hhhhhuh-huh-huh...
