The Ugly in Ugly Betty

Female Jackie D | Category: TV

I knew there must be a reason why this show is so popular with bitter old maids and gay men.

[T]he only characters that even approach anything near masculinity are, well, some of the women. When Salma Hayek's character says, "Men will be useless within one hundred years," she's obviously referring to her male co-stars. With a gusto unknown to Latina women of her social standing, the lusty Mexican asks her potential love interest to "show me your rack" as she hustles yet another game of pool from an infantilized "leading male." The only male character that is even remotely portrayed in a positive light is a young boy. Justin is the show-tunes singing, fashion-magazine reading 12-year-old who idolizes Martha Stewart and is ecstatic that his sister's shampoo "really gets the frizz out."

I tried watching Ugly Betty recently, and found it irritating in the extreme.
