Dr. David Thorpe does not enjoy heavy metal music

Male Jim Treacher | Category: Comedy • Music
If there's one metal track out there that disproves the notion that all metal is complete fucking crap, I'd absolutely love to hear it... I haven’t heard any metal band that isn’t composed of stunted adolescence, half-assed rebellion, tongue-in-cheek stupidity, masturbatory pap, tuneless dirge, juvenile morbidity, retarded sexuality, or some nauseating combination of those elements. I haven't heard a single defense of its artistry that made a shred of sense. I haven't heard a "serious" metal song that didn’t sound comical. I haven’t heard a fantasy metal song with anything fucking interesting to say about dragons. I haven't heard anything, seen anything, read anything, or met anyone who could convince me that metal, as a whole, is not artistically bankrupt, direly uncool, and irredeemably fucking dumb. Not most of it. All of it.

Read the rest. On the other hand: Dethklok.

...imagine if William Butler Yeats only wrote poems about dogs eating peanut butter, and if he used only the same fifteen or twenty words in every single poem.

Beautiful.

But, you know how some people (e.g. yours truly) are all like "TV sucks, man, I hate TV, I never watch the stuff, you couldn't pay me to own a TV, but, like, OK, I do kinda like Law and Order: Hot Blonde Assistant DA Who They Got Rid of and It Sucks Now". Or I did until they got rid of the hot blonde etc.

But, anyway, remember that Metallica record back around 1990 where they had some hits, and all the Metallica fans on alt.rock-n-roll were all enraged and accusing the lads of "selling out"? Yeah, well, one or two of those hits didn't entirely suck.

P.S. Bring me the severed head of Joss Whedon.

Note to Mr. Thorpe: If you want to criticize something as "intellectually bankrupt" it's probably not a good idea to blatantly plagarize the work of others (specifically the faux review of Spinal Tap's "Intravenus DeMilo") while doing it.

That dude probably listens to ABBA. Or Paul Simon. Or Cibo Matto.

I got a Thorpian observation for ya. Anybody who listens to music because they feel the need to LISTEN to "good art" is a dick. See? A generalization that is dismissive and derisive.
