Nikki Finke stars in Brokebrain 'Blogger'
You want to read something funny? Well, you're in luck, because the LA Weekly has gone and given Nikki Finke her own 'blog'. (None of the permalinks work, and she doesn't link to anything but her own articles, so it's hard to say she's really part of the blogosphere.)
My friend Cathy Seipp's 2004 piece about Nikki Finke tells you all you need to know about this journalist, but for more insight into what passes for cogent thinking in LA entertainment media, check out Finke's post about what last night's Oscar results really mean:
Turns out Hollywood is as homophobic as Red State country. In touch, not out of touch.
UPDATE: Wow, someone's got enough time to check her referrer logs early and often! Nikki Finke emailed us to say that she doesn't foresee linking to anyone else on her non-blog. I'd explain why that's a terrible idea in terms of generating sustainable, return traffic and inbound links, but I don't think someone who actually believes that "Hollywood is as homophobic as Red State country" would understand. (As for why our comments system rejected your comment, Nikki, I can only guess that its taste and sense filters are in fine working order.)
So Finke's argument is that Brokeback lost because the hypocritical, homophobic Academy voters wouldn't watch the screener, and therefore didn't vote for it, right? But she ignores the fact that Ang Lee won Best Director for the same movie. So that means that either
a) the voters did watch the movie, and thought that it had the best direction, but liked Crash better over all;
or
b) they didn't watch the movie, but decided to reward Lee anyway, knowing that the ignorant, bigoted rubes in the red states would think they were rewarding a 'gay' movie.
Finke really didn't think that through, did she?

I liked this part:
Then he sets up what starts out like a winner, noting how “a lot of people say this town is too liberal…out of touch with Mainstream America…a moral black hole where innocence is obliterated in an orgy of sexual gratification and greed…” But then he ends with, “I don’t really have a joke here.”Why not, for chrissakes? Didn’t this gig pay you to write punch lines?
That was the punchline, genius.
