Smoking bans, health warnings and lobby groups denying those who wish to exercise the right to smoke, smokers are maligned and ostracised, forced into dark corners to huddle in clusters of social outlaws. Lighting a cigarette in pubs is becoming anachronistic but in some societies private clubs will be denied the right to allow members to smoke. Why? For health reasons sure, for the protection of workers in these establishments, of course, but most of all for hypocritical reasons. Was it Martin Luther King who said that democracy equals hypocrisy? Is it an accident that it is democracies that have all voted to outlaw smoking when some 25% of their electorate are smokers; does that number supports the Iraqi war, Guantanamo bay, etc?

The truth be told smoking represents the easiest health target and can be veiled in rhetoric that moves the general populace, how do I demonstrate against the Iraqi war , a million people came out in protest in London and were ignored, could the anti smoking lobby raise that many to show their support. The nanny states needs to be consistent what about eating habits, what about the people who work on oil rigs, surely as many people if not more will die from junk food in the next century, should we ban burgers? Which lifestyle choices are next in the cross hairs? Oil rig workers get danger pay why not the same for those who work in places that permit smoking? I am sure many smokers would welcome the chance to earn a premium rate due to the risk of passive smoking.

To reverse this attack on the rights of people who smoke for pleasure a new concept has been introduced, a sminker, this is person who smokes only when they drink. The goal of the sminker movement is to collect a list of all those across the world who have made a lifestyle choice to engage in smoking in a limited and controlled fashion as part of an overall relaxation package. Through this group we will drive the introduction of sminker friendly pubs, clubs, etc in terms of human rights legislation, today they will ban smoking tomorrow it will be other activities and choices made by and between consenting adults.
