Mouse-Moderator Makes Multiplex Managers Mewl

| Category: Movies

So Robert A. Iger, the chairman of the Walt Disney Company, is recommending the release of movies on DVD at the same time they're in theaters. Instead of the way it is now, 2 weeks later. Iger seems to speak entirely in jargon like "window," "compress," "pushback," etc., but give the guy a break. I don't think they'll hire you for a job like that if you actually speak English. Anyway, his jist is that it might be a good idea for movie studios to give people what they want in exchange for their money. And of course, the movie theaters are freaking out about such a "death threat to the industry":

[John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theater Owners] said Mr. Iger was drawing the wrong conclusion from a 10-percent drop in box-office revenue this summer, namely that some consumers prefer to watch movies at home.

Instead, Mr. Fithian said, the slump was a result of the poor quality of this summer's movies, observing that declines of this magnitude did not happen because consumers suddenly decided they preferred DVD's.

"The reason for short-term peaks and valleys is the product," he said. "There aren't long-term structural things to industry that change in a one-year time span."

I don't know, can't they both be right? Oh, and check out the Google News page for this story:
